— Hades, to Orion | ||
Hades is one of the head scientists of the project involving the creation of Horrors, and became the official head after Vesta and Orion’s death.
He had been experimenting, creating and killing T-2s to find another way of creating the cure, or to safely remove it from Atlas to prevent him from being sacrificed. Both Atlas and Deus described him as being “obsessed” with Atlas.
Appearance
Hades has brown short hair that covers most of his forehead and red eyes, with facial hair on his chin. In the present, he has bossily more wrinkles around his features, as well as visible strands of white hairs.
He is seen to wear a white lab coat over a black shirt and dark pants.
History
Hades working himself to death for Atlas.
During the war, Hades' hometown because destroyed, with nothing left but rubble and destruction. Hades eventually, together with Vesta, Orion and Nora, attended an elite school that preached their students as their nation's brightest hope, educating them as an investment in hopes that some of them will be able to save the land from destruction.[1] In their class, Hades was ranked ninth, in which he expressed subtle disappointment in the score.
After their graduation, the four reunited in the project that will eventually create the horrors, which are human weapons with supernatural abilities aimed to be used as military weapons. From the four head scientists, he showed the least amount of care and concern towards the Originals, although he played with them from time to time, there was no special bond between them unlike the other three scientists (Vesta with Atlas, Nora with Deus, Orion with Viis).
After Vesta's death, Orion decided to go through with Vesta's original plan of the cure, Hades immediately showed reluctance as it was only supposed to be used after the war was finished, and agrily left the room. Afterwards, when seemingly apologising for his outburst earlier, he poisoned Orion's drink, saying that he "never understood Vesta."[2] He declared that he won't allow the cure to be completed, and will have all traces of it destroyed, preventing Atlas from meeting the same fate as his parents.
Flashback implying Vesta and Hades' secret intimate relationship.
In response, Orion aimed a gun at Hades, but decided not to kill him, telling Hades that he "shouldn't have given her to me," implying his knowledge of Hades and Vesta's relationship. After him and Nora took over as the project leads, he allowed military personelles and scientists into the lab who were told to determine if the children were ready for war.[3] When Nora confronted Hades about this, she found out that he had been creating T-2s out of the children's cells, justifying that he did it for the "sake of our dreams."[3]
When Hades finally found Nora and Atlas, she had already completed the cure and had altered it so that it cannot be removed from his body, or he will die. Nora questioned that Hades knew something about Vesta that the rest of them did not, where the flashback implied that Hades had an intimate relationship with Vesta.[4]
The four head scientists, with only Hades remaining now.
Ultimately, Nora killed herself to hide the information that she knows, ensuring that Hades will not be able to remove the cure. Despite his desperate attempt to stop Nora, Hades couldn't stop him, and became the only of the four head scientists left. After capturing Atlas, he organised Atlas to stay with Nine, and allowed them to live peacefully until the break-in in the story's beginning, assisted by Annie.
In the present, during Hades and Atlas' reunion, he confirmed that his only goal was to save Atlas. When Atlas asked him what he wanted to do, he replied that it is "probably something you'll despise me for."[5] This enraged Atlas, but he hesitated to kill him, wanting to spare them of the death of their last 'parent.' Hades replied that Atlas should live more selfishly, as Vesta, Orion and nora spent their whole lives thinking of other people, but ultimately died miserable deaths without any sort of reward.
He is currently frozen in ice by Atlas.
Relationships
The scientists
Vesta
Hades and Vesta are implied to have had a secret, intimate relationship with each other, where they still have feelings for each other despite Vesta being married to Orion. Hades believe that he is currently following Vesta's true desires, as he expressed that Orion "never understood Vesta" by choosing to complete the cure.[2]
Orion
Hades and Orion were close friends during school and after. Hades ultimately killed Orion to prevent him from completing the cure. Orion likely knew about Vesta and Hades' relationship, telling him that he "never should've given her to me" as he died.
